Do nipple creams actually help with painful breastfeeding?
A variety of emollients are currently available to ease nipple pain. Non-lanolin-based natural nipple butters heal while protecting the nipple. Lanolin-based products act as a moisture barrier, but do not provide as much healing. These should be applied after nursing and pumping, until all nipple tenderness is resolved. A small dab of nipple cream or butter is all that’s needed. These products are safe for baby and do not need to be wiped off the nipple before beginning the next feeding session.
